Jen Gleason-Five smart ways to use wearable technology in the classroom

How exciting is it, to think about the potential of  wearable technology in education. As educators, one of our biggest challenges is engaging students. Wearable technology allows for the opportunity to keep our students excited about learning. When reading this article two important thoughts came to mind.  In particular, I connected with the VR googles and Smartwatches. Immediately, I thought about our social studies curriculum. In fourth grade, our students learn about the U.S. Constitution, Westward Expansion and the Civil War. Finding resources to virtually engage students during this time, I imagine, would be thrilling.  Smartwatches was another wearable technology I connected with.  In this article, it mentioned how a smartwatch can be used as a tool for a large group of people to work together. This made me think about how the use of a smartwatch could be used to support a collaborative learning environment.

  1. The VR goggle at some point will probably be a standard in the classroom setting especially for history classes. To be able to see and experience historic places virtually is pretty cool.

  2. I wish they had these when I was learning history. I may have been much more engaged. It wasn't my favorite subject. I hope you have the opportunity down the road to incorporate these into your curriculum. Hope you are well. Stay safe.

  3. I, too, love the idea of integrating SmartWatches and VR goggles! I actually focused my other projects on both topics. I love the idea of the uses for history. I'm a reading teacher and would love to use the VR goggles to build background knowledge for everything we read.

  4. Wearable technology! Isn't it amazing? I have been intrigued about this topic for a few years now. Some of the school districts that are involved in my program have given their students smart watches for the physical education coursework. As long as they logged a certain number of steps, they could get credit for PE. This is a great way to engage students since, once again, all students are not the same. In PE there are tons of variables for student performance. Certain skills, games, activities in PE can be so easy to some, but a complete challenge to others.
