Five smart ways to use wearable technology in the classroom
https://gadgetsandwearables.com/2019/12/15/wearable-technology-in-the-classroom/
This article reviewed the following five wearables that can be used in the classroom: GoPro cameras, activity-tracking wristbands, smartwatches, earbuds/headphones, and VR glasses. Using any of these can add to instruction in many classroom environments. Taking video with either the GoPro cameras is an excellent tool to have students complete projects of their hand-on learning. I could see using this while doing my CPR instruction with students. The activity tracker is not only good for the PE instructor. I could utilize this tool taking pulses in the Allied Health class and in a lesson on metabolism and calories burned. The use of smartwatches is endless. From time management, accessing on-line materials, games, note-taking, recording instruction, and so many more. Of course, the issue is that not all students have access to this tool, but the future will allow for more use as the prices hopefully go down, and money is available for schools to purchase these for student use. Another tool is the use of music via earbuds/headphones for students for whom this works to drown out distractions around them. Although the use of music is not for everyone, I find playing music in the classroom at appropriate times can be soothing. The last tool discussed in the article was the use of VR, which can be used to take virtual field trips, demonstration of hands-on, or immerse the learner into the topic in a deeper way. All of these wearable technologies are the future of education and exciting additions to classroom instruction for students and teachers.

I love all of these tech ideas that are shared in this article. I just wish we had all the money we needed to share these tools with the students to show what they can do for them and others. I bet they could be next creators of great technology advances if had them, especially in the medical field.
ReplyDeleteThe information our smart watches give us can be overwhelming in my opinion but if you understand what the watches are telling us than they can be really helpful. Lately my watch is measuring changes happening with me since we have been quarantined and that news has helped me make minor adjustments in my life.
ReplyDeleteI believe that wearing a smart watch may become a daily distraction for students if they are constantly looking at the notifications that can be accessed through the smart watch. I have one of the original Fitbit technology, and I still find that it can be distractible when the notification "buzz" catches my attention. Given that I have all seniors, we are very aware that they are essentially waiting to hear from their post-secondary and college plans, and would be checking their wearable tech constantly. I had to silence my notifications simply due to the distractibility component.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like this article was very helpful and it is good to see how you can use the technology in your classroom
