5. Students Learn Best When You Do This
https://www.teachthought.com/pedagogy/students-learn-best/
For this article I will point out what I liked and what I disagree with. Students like hands on work, when work is fun and when they have a say with discussion. I agree with all of these things as I think back to my most memorable lessons and they typically included some if not all of those aspects so it’s something to consider when making future lesson plans. The main thing I disagreed with in the article was stating that kids prefer teachers to assign groups for group work. Full disclosure I teach the on level or lower level students so maybe A.P. students prefer groups assigned but I can tell you that anytime I picked groups for the class it was a headache no matter how much thought or how good my intentions were. All in all besides this one issue the article was pretty good.

The courses I teach are all direct instruction which tend to get boring for some students because it's the same old thing every day, different topics, but the same way lessons are taught. I have become creative to give them experiences through a variety of resources, and sometimes, I'm shocked that I get complaining because of change. So sometimes you can never win. I find if I don't assign groups there always seem to be the same people left out and a group of friends that just want to "work together" to do not much of anything buy play!
ReplyDeleteAssigning groups is a much better way to handle behavior, someone being left out, and having a mix of personalities and knowledge. In my class, everyone is at the same academic capability so I like to randomly assign groups with cards, clothing, birthdays, height to mix it up.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of groups for discussion works in so many instances, but I agree that it isn't for all students. All the students in my sessions are academically similar in ability but that doesn't always make groups easy. I have noticed that the quiet, shy students are still quiet and shy when in their assigned groups. I am very cognizant of this issue since I can relate. I was very shy in high school and felt so awkward that I thought more about how to speak up than to learn what the topic was being discussed in groups.
ReplyDeleteI try to split up how groups are chosen. Some times I allow kids to choose their groups and other times I assign groups. It really depends on the class. Also, hands on activities are always good
