I was wondering if there were other ways to use the FitBit other than tracking information such as the steps the students have taken for their health class or their heart rate for their gym class. In this article, I found that a school district in Fresno, California used an app called Strides which collects data based on what accomplishments the students make in school. It will reward students who attend school regularly, earn good grades, who are recognized by teachers for participation and for those who participate in after school activities. The students have an opportunity to level up, so it keeps the students motivated to keep moving along in the program, with its game-like features. There is no way to move backward; it's all based on positive reinforcements. While reading, it was interesting to hear about a student who said she really wasn't into Strides, but she just couldn't help herself going in to keep moving up, which is a win-win in my opinion.
My Fitbit can recognize running, walking, biking and swimming. The Fitbit will also track your heart rate the entire time you have it on. The only hang up with heart rate is that the watch has to be firmly attached to your wrist or you will get a false reading. I hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteI also wondered if Fitbit was only for physical activity and for the gym class, or maybe a health issue. I was shocked to hear about Strides that can keep a student moving forward with the positive reinforcements. I truly believe our students need their own way of receiving positive reinforcement and this could be a great tool to do just that! It is a self motivator in ways, and only as competitive as you see yourself for yourself. What a great potential to see student ability and confidence improve! <3
ReplyDeletePositive reinforcements is a game changer for many students. Love this idea.
ReplyDeleteAnything to increase motivation is awesome. Since students are so into technology this sounds like a good thing to do to increase participation and motivation. I agree with the above comment that positive reinforcements are a game changer !
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great idea and yes I agree that positive reinforcements are a game changer!
