Have you ever been out shopping or just taking a nice run on the bike trail and you bump into a former student who says hello to you, but you cannot recall their name? (This happens to me quite often.) Well, let your AR glasses help you out when you are in this pinch. There is a facial recognition feature that will allow you to take one look at that student and give you all the details about him/her with what's included in the school's database. I absolutely love this idea! The article shares several other features, but this one stood out for me. The first article said it would allow professors of large class sizes to get on a more personal level with their students especially if there are over a hundred students in their lecture hall. Wouldn't that be great as a student to not feel just like another body in a huge hall?
Another great use for facial recognition is that it can provide feedback on how well the students are understanding the material that is being taught. This can be done based on what the students share about their understanding of the topic being discussed. Students can share they understand, that they are completely confused or that they may have a question about what is being taught. This will allow teachers to collect live data and adapt immediately. It will also allow the educator to make note of who they should be reaching out to in order to make sure the student fully understands the concepts. clarification was made or not.
The glasses sound really cool I guess when reading about it would really only give me one concern. I feel like something like smart glasses would have the ability to record what a student is watching and while I see that as helpful for review I don't know if I want to have all 48 minutes of my class recorded as it would make me feel stiff as I would be aware I'm being recorded.
ReplyDeleteI am the worst remembering names and would love that feature.
ReplyDeleteI first thought the idea of face recognition was awesome! I, too, have a heck of a time remembering names. I even forget names of people that I may have known for years. If I run into someone on the street somewhere, I find myself automatically going through. the rolodex in my head to have that name placed back in the. forefront of my mind. I have always been this way. I can recall when I was graduating from college and was walking through campus with my parents, a friend was walking up to us so I introduced my parents. It was one of those most embarrassing moments not being able to recall his name. However, with the face recognition comes the ability to assess student learning and understanding. How does it do that? Is this the beginning of an era where mind reading will be a possibility for anyone? That leaves me with a little trepidation.
ReplyDeleteTwo things came to my mind after reading this summary and the comments. First facial recognition would be helpful because it is embarrassing when I can't remember kids names. The other thought was that I agree with Dom in that I would not be comfortable being recorded
