Jen Gleason - Wearable Tech in the Classroom

In this article, I took note of the brain sensing headband Muse. This sounds like another device to help in aiding the wellness of the user. In the article it states that you could potentially use this wearable technology to help with focus by monitoring brain signals. This might be a nice alternative when considering options for students who have difficulty focusing or otherwise feeling overwhelmed with all that is on their plate. This wearable technology could potentially provide redirection to students when the teacher is unavailable. It also seems to have the potential to give teachers data on how the student's brain is interacting with the activities assigned. If this wearable truly could provide this type of information, teachers could then use the data to better meet the needs of their students.

  1. I read a little about this piece of technology and it sounds futuristic and kinda cool. The brain activity stuff would probably be really useful on a collegiate level.

  2. This sounds great for the world in which I teach. Allowing us to know what some of our special ed students are thinking in the moment would be life-changing for not only the teachers, but for the students as well. To allow to feel understood is something I feel they struggle with on a daily basis. It would cause less frustration.

  3. Jen, I love that you focused on the student and their individual needs. I have always struggled with identifying learning styles for some students. Wouldn't that be great if Muse became available for every classroom. We could assess one student at a time to help with completing IEPs, etc. My focus on this was more scientific in that my students could learn how EEG's are performed and what the results do show. We used to have a Neuroscience rotation in the hospital and it was one of the student's favorites. If it was slow, the staff would hook the student up to the EEG machine. They LOVED that.

  4. The brain and how it interprets information is a fascinating subject. Monitoring brain signals would definitely help teachers help students. I could use this during our neuroscience unit
