Wearable Tech Taking Education by Storm

Virtual reality is something that I would love to do in my classroom.  The article mentions that one can use it to provide "creative and historical worlds for students to explore. "  This would be great for my Western Civ. Class the possibilities are limitless.  I never knew one could use VR to do this.  Allowing kids to experience other historical eras is something that would really enhance the learning experience.   Being able to use VR to visit a World War One trench or Ancient Greece or Rome would be awesome for the kids and bring history alive.  The major drawback would be the cost however.  The other article I read mentioned visiting museums but the idea of visiting eras really intrigues me.  I also could use it for my psych class.  We use visual distortion googles for one of your units that shows how the brain adapts , but VR goggles could be used for many demonstrations such as behavior therapy.  The article also mentions that even having just one of these units would help students and I agree.
The smart watch also intrigues me especially the Instapper app which allows one to convert books or articles into speech.  I could also have kids use smart watches to monitor the quality of their sleep which is part of a unit we do on consciousness in psych.  Last I like the idea of using Muse because the brain and its functions are a major unit that we cover too.

  1. lets really give this a try when we get back into the building... I think if multiple people from our department try it together we have a greater chance of the school supporting us.

  2. The great things about Google Expeditions is that you can print out a full lesson plan. You definitely need to go through it yourself and "edit" what you like and don't like. For instance, the one I did on Pearl Harbor, it was run kind of a like a scavenger hunt. It would zoom in memorials and then you can ask three different leveled questions. Sometimes the higher level questions were too hard for my students, but they also became great discussion points when I did it. It's definitely worth trying at least once.

  3. I really enjoy the perspective of your expertise in history/geography. Wow...wouldn't that be awesome to visit the 19th century! I was super exciting when I saw that you can do virtual surgery, but to tour the world today and historically would just be amazing.
