While I pride myself on my classroom management, I am always open to learning new strategies to help my classroom run even more smoothly. Many of the suggestions involved things I currently do in my classroom. My favorite classroom management strategy that was suggested in the article and one that I implement every day is to stop starting the day or class period with roll call. I start every class period with "Good Things" where I pull a handful of names out of a cup of popsicles sticks and ask each student to share something good – big or small - going on in their life. Then we celebrate the "Good Thing" as a class. It is a quick and simple way to build a classroom community and positive rapport. It also allows me to get to know my students really well.
One suggestion the article makes that I really loved that I have not tried before was to create a risk-reward procedure to encourage students to participate, take a risk and mask a mistake. This could be as simple as writing the student's name on the board. I particularly liked the idea that rewarding a student's willingness to be wrong in front of the class levels the playing field between gifted and struggling students.

Amanda, I love the way you start your class with "good things" and the idea of rewarding students for taking a risk even though they might make a mistake is a great one! Middle schoolers are so afraid of being wrong and I think that anything we can do to create a safe environment for them where they can take risks will pay back tenfold.
